My Views
A very frequently thing I'm asked (in person AND online) is what my views are, philosophical or political, so I'm layout out my main views on this very cool website.
Economic Views
I describe myself as a libertarian socialist as I believe this is the best way to describe my general opinions. I generally prioritize co-ops as my preferred method of achieving socialism, I think that state-owned attempts at socialism just weren't very democratic (and I would argue not even socialist) and I don't want to repeat that.
LGBT
I am in favor of rights for all LGBT people. I love my LGBT people, mostly because I am one. Here are some common things I hear in response:
- What about xenogenders? I don't care. They make up like 4% of trans people (Not LGBT people, trans people), and even if I don't understand it, it's just easier to respect.
- What about sports? First of all, I don't care about your sports. Secondly, HRT weakens trans women's bone structure enough that I'm okay with them participating on the competitive level.
- I think it's weird! I don't care.
- What about minors? Trans em' up
- I can't support this, I'm Armenian What?
Religion
I am an anti-theist, I believe religion is harmful to society. It discourages scientific exploration to answers (most notably, how the world was created) and I feel the benefits it gives are really just things which could be achieved without religion, and the downsides I believe are things inherent to religion. I also think the full belief that a being beyond our comprehension created the entire universe leads to being less thoughtful in general, though this is really just my opinion. I'm currently reading up on anti-theism so I can understand it more so bare with me.
To elaborate on my overall takes on religion, I don't believe that any religion is any more harmful than another. I can't take someone who talks about Islam corrupting the world seriously, because I can find a billion examples of Christians doing the same things Muslims do. I view Christianity the same as Islam the same as Pastafarianism.
Common objections I've heard:
- Civil Rights movements were based on religion! Yes, and anti-civil rights movements were also based on religion. In practice they had more to do with progressive gaining more traction than anything with religion.
- Erm, let people enjoy things? No, I believe religion is harmful to society and i am against it.
- Isn't it better to believe in God than to not just in case he's real? You would not believe how many times someone has told me this, this is Pascal's Wager, and the issue here is that it applies to EVERY religion. Why don't you just convert to Islam? Why don't you just convert to the 4000 other religions? I mean you might as well just in case, right?
Now for my overall atheism thoughts - I do not believe god is real, and I have a few main issues with religion (also said on video by Alex O'Connor):
- Problem of suffering - Why would an all-knowing all-loving god allow suffering? If god created the earth (as stated in Genesis) why would he knowingly allow natural disasters to kill thousands of animals? Why would he make an Earth populated with creatures if it's gonna explode in a million years?
- Soteriological Luck - There are 4000 different religions and it just so happens the correct one which is the true answer to the universe is the one your family believes in, and it just so happens that God would have his citizens only believe in what their parents believe.
- Lack of evidence - I haven't seen evidence for any religion being real. Quite simple, really.
Copyright Law
I am against all forms of copyright law. From a philosophical perspective, I don't believe that you should be allowed to own ideas. Take a look at patents for example, right now 1 in 5 diabetics have to ration their insulin because they can't afford it, and billion-dollar companies who own the patents for insulin decided to make it super expensive. Can you imagine if there was no patent and everyone could make insulin? What a world.
- But it supports independent artists! Then why did Disney, a billion-dollar company, spend millions making it so copyright protections lasted life of the author + 75 years? Can you think of a single time copyright law actually protected artists? And again, philosophical perspective, I believe the people should be allowed to do with art what they want.
- You just hate artists! Next question, please.
